That win at Hamilton came over a mile and a furlong on a summer's day, and trainer R P Burns was quietly encouraged by it. The horse had been running at a rating of 53 when he broke through, and Burns felt he was capable of winning again off his current mark of 60 — a modest but honest assessment. He also noted that a drop back in distance from a mile and two furlongs might suit, which suggests the yard has a clear enough idea of where Carvalhal is best placed.
The distance stats back that up to a point. Over the mile-and-one to mile-and-two range, Carvalhal has managed 1 win from 14 races — that's roughly 1 in every 14 attempts, which is a low hit rate, but it does represent the entirety of his success. At Class 6, the lowest tier of British racing, he has won 1 from 10, which works out at about 10% — not spectacular, but at least he has shown he can compete at that level.
The partnership with jockey Nicola Burns is a notable talking point, and not for happy reasons. She has ridden him 11 times without a win — zero from eleven is a long wait for both of them, and you would not back that combination blindly on the strength of it. Whether Burns sticks with the pairing on his return from this break will be worth watching.
The yard, based at Collinstown in County Westmeath, has sent out five winners this season, so it is not a stable short of confidence. Carvalhal is clearly not their star turn, but at his level — Class 6, a mile-ish, somewhere like Hamilton where he has already shown he can get the job done — there is a small but genuine case for him. He is a horse who needs everything to fall right, and it rarely does, but the trainer believes the ability is still there. After six months off, the first race back will tell us a lot about where he stands.
