Carolus Magnus

Those two wins are worth looking at closely. The first came at Newmarket back in September 2021, one of the most famous racecourses in Britain. The second came at Musselburgh in October 2025 — about seven months ago — meaning there was a gap of over four years between victories. That is a long time between wins, and it speaks to the level this horse operates at: consistent enough to keep getting entered, placed enough to justify the effort, but a genuine winner only on the rarest of days.

The ground matters here. On normal conditions, Carolus Magnus has won 2 from 12 races — a 17% win rate, or roughly 1 in every 6, which is genuinely solid. That number suggests the horse has a clear preference, and trainers Michael and David Easterby, based at Sheriff Hutton in North Yorkshire, will be well aware of it. The yard has been in strong form this season — 51 winners sent out — so they know how to place a horse to give it its best chance.

At the top end of the race quality scale, however, Carolus Magnus has found things tough. In nine races at Class 2 level — the upper tier of British racing — it has not managed a single win. Zero from nine. That is not a surprise for a horse with only two career victories, but it confirms that while this is a decent, durable competitor, it is not a horse for the very biggest days.

Recent form shows a pattern of seconds (twice), one tenth, a fifth, and a twelfth — busy without being brilliant. Still active, still placing, still turning up.
