Cairdeas

Paul Midgley, who trains out of Westow in North Yorkshire, only recently acquired Cairdeas after buying him from the highly regarded William Haggas yard. Midgley has been in good form this season, sending out 39 winners, and he is already forming a clear picture of what this horse needs. He noted that Cairdeas travelled well over seven furlongs at York but likely ran out of stamina before the line — a horse who looks good until the race gets serious is often simply running at the wrong trip. Midgley's plan is to bring him back to six furlongs, where he expects him to be more competitive, and he believes there is more improvement to come as the horse matures.

That reads as a genuine signal worth paying attention to. Cairdeas has done his best work over seven furlongs to a mile, winning 1 of his 8 races at that range, but the trainer's view is that the distance has actually been stretching him. Dropping to six furlongs could reframe him entirely. Tom Marquand has been in the saddle for seven of his fifteen races and they have won together once, a partnership that has clicked before even if it has not clicked lately. Most of his racing has come at Class 4 level — a solid but unspectacular tier — where he has managed 1 win from 11 attempts. He raced just yesterday, so he is clearly fit and active. The question now is whether a change of distance unlocks something a bit more interesting.
