The striking thing about Blue Universe's record is how rarely it reaches the podium at all. Twelve places from thirty outings means the horse finishes in the money roughly once every two and a half races—a rate that suggests modest ability but real reliability. There is something to be said for that. At the distances it favours, between a mile and one furlong and a mile and two furlongs, it has won once from just three attempts, which hints at a narrow range where it competes more competitively. Yet that glimpse of form remains locked in the past. In its last six races, Blue Universe has managed one second place and a couple of mid-field finishes, but nothing that suggests a return to winning ways is imminent. It raced just a day ago, so the team clearly still sees potential worth testing.

Michael Attwater's yard at Epsom is a productive operation that has sent out 27 winners this season, though Blue Universe has not been among them.
