At three years old, there is at least time on its side. Many horses of this age take a while to find their feet, and four races is still a relatively small sample — but the finishes, particularly that eleventh and twelfth, suggest Billingsgate Gold is currently finding life competitive. There is work to do.

What is worth noting is the quality of the operation behind it. Stuart Williams trains out of Newmarket — the heartland of British flat racing — and his yard has sent out 67 winners already this season. That is a genuinely productive outfit, and horses trained by Williams are in capable hands. Whether Billingsgate Gold can tap into that form and turn a corner remains to be seen, but it is not for lack of professional support.
