Something clicks between this horse and that jockey, and the trainer Jim Boyle, based at Epsom in Surrey, will have noticed. Boyle's yard has sent out 25 winners this season alone, so this is not a small operation guessing in the dark.

Big Bear Hug performs best when the trip stretches to a mile and one or a mile and two furlongs — two wins from 12 races at those distances, a win rate of 17%, or roughly 1 in 6. That is meaningfully better than its overall record, which suggests shorter trips are a stretch and longer ones are probably asking too much. It mostly competes at Class 5, which is the bread-and-butter level of British racing rather than the glamour end — two wins from 18 races there at 11%, consistent but unspectacular.

The last win came at Goodwood in June 2025, nearly a year ago now. Goodwood is a beautifully unusual track — undulating, quirky, with bends that catch out horses who do not handle it well — so winning there at all is a reasonable marker of quality. The recent form reads 3-9-5-8-10-6, and that middle stretch of 8s and 10s suggests a horse that went through a flat patch. It raced just yesterday, so it is clearly in regular work. The question Boyle and Whelan will be trying to answer is whether the right combination of distance, track, and jockey can bring that winning feeling back.
