That is not a flashy record, but it tells you the horse knows exactly where it belongs and does its job honestly at that level. The most eye-catching detail, though, is Southwell — an all-weather track in Nottinghamshire that clearly suits this horse in a way few tracks do. Two wins from 13 races there is notable not because the raw number is huge, but because Southwell has the kind of tight, flat, artificial surface that rewards horses who genuinely like it. Beneficiary does.

The recent figures — a couple of seconds mixed in with mid-field finishes — suggest the horse is still trying, still placing occasionally, but the wins have dried up. At seven years old, with 56 races on the clock, the window for a turnaround is not wide. Still, it raced just yesterday, which means Bailey clearly believes there is still something left to find.
