Beggarman

What makes Beggarman genuinely interesting is what he does at Ffos Las, the Welsh track tucked away near Llanelli. He has won there twice from just five visits — a 40% win rate at a single course — which is the kind of record that makes you sit up. For context, most horses win far less than 1 in 5 races at any track across their careers. His most recent win came there in July 2025, and it is clearly where he is happiest. He also has a marked preference for normal ground conditions, winning 3 of his 12 races on a standard surface — a 25% win rate that comfortably outstrips his overall average.

His trainer Hughie Morrison describes him with a kind of affectionate exasperation: this is a horse who, in his words, does his best not to win. Morrison has noted that Beggarman came back this year a little behind where he needed to be, so his first run of the campaign was essentially a fitness exercise rather than a serious attempt. The plan, modest but realistic, is for him to find his one win of the season and collect a few places along the way. Morrison cheerfully admits the horse is very good at finishing second — and the 18 career places on his record bear that out entirely.

His regular partner in the saddle is Rob Hornby, who has ridden him in 8 races for a single win between them — hardly a dominant partnership, but one the team persists with. Beggarman raced just yesterday, keeping his string of six races without a win intact for now. At nine years old, with a personality described as quirky, he is not a horse reinventing himself. But at Ffos Las, on a normal surface, with a race to sharpen him up? He becomes a different proposition altogether.
