Bayraat

That sole win came at Nottingham, and it remains the only time Bayraat has reached the top step. More striking is what has happened since — 35 months without a win, and recent form of 2-5-14-10-8-8 tells a mixed story. A second and a fifth in the last two outings show there are still moments of promise, but the three runs before that were quietly forgettable. At 10 years old, horses do not tend to improve dramatically, so that runner-up spot most recently is probably as good as things get right now.

The horse typically competes at Class 5, which is effectively the bottom rung of British flat racing — the races designed for horses who need to find their level. Despite that, Bayraat has gone 0 from 16 in that grade, which is a puzzling record. You would expect a horse of this ability to be competitive at the lowest level, yet the win has never come there. The one and only victory actually came in a different context entirely, which makes it an oddity worth noting.

Regular partner Billy Garritty has ridden Bayraat in 11 of its races and has found the winner's enclosure just once together — that same Nottingham day in 2023. Trainer Tom Tate operates out of Tadcaster in North Yorkshire and has sent out four winners this season, so the yard is clearly capable of producing results. Bayraat raced just yesterday, which shows the horse is fit and active, even if a second win looks a long way off at this stage of its career.
