Compare that to his overall record and you start to understand what the team at David Pipe's yard in Somerset are looking for every time they plan his next run. Pipe has had 35 winners this season alone, and he clearly knows what makes Bashful Boy tick: at his best distance of one mile six furlongs to two miles, the horse has won 3 of his 17 races at that trip — nearly 1 in every 6, a solid return.

His last win came at Newton Abbot in July 2023, which is now 34 months ago. That gap matters, and Pipe has spoken openly about trying to unlock a little more from him by stepping him up to three miles when conditions allow. He ran fourth in the Cesarewitch — a famous long-distance flat race — which Pipe described as above expectations, particularly given the wet ground. The trainer has been clear that soft or heavy ground isn't where Bashful Boy wants to be, and a run at Cheltenham on bad ground ended with him being pulled up entirely.

His most regular jockey, Jack Tudor, has ridden him 12 times and won once together — a win rate of about 1 in 12. The partnership has yet to fully click. What the post-race reports do suggest, though, is a horse who finishes his races honestly and responds when given a clear run — "genuine" and hitting the line well are the kinds of words that make racing people sit up and take notice.

Bashful Boy raced just yesterday and his recent form shows a string of fourth-place finishes — frustratingly close, but not quite getting there. At ten years old, with dry ground and the right trip, one more win isn't out of the question.
