The win rate tells a more sobering story, though. Three wins from 46 races works out at around 1 in every 15, and the last of those came at Carlisle back in June 2024 — nearly two years ago now. Since then, six races have come and gone without a victory, and the recent form figures of 6-13-8-7-9-11 suggest a horse that is finding life harder than it once did. Finishing sixth is fine; finishing thirteenth is a different conversation entirely.

Where Barley does show a genuine spark is on fast, dry ground. With 2 wins from 10 races in those conditions, that is a 20% win rate — or roughly 1 in every 5 — which is a striking contrast to the career average. It matters, because it tells you this is not simply a horse going through the motions. Give it the right conditions and it becomes a completely different proposition. Keep that in mind if the summer sun arrives and Barley heads to the track.

The yard behind the horse is Tim Easterby's operation at Great Habton in North Yorkshire, one of the most productive stables in the north of England. With 126 winners sent out this season alone, Easterby clearly knows how to get horses ready to run — which makes Barley's extended winless run all the more puzzling. Most often in the saddle is David Allan, who has partnered Barley in 14 races together without finding the winner's enclosure once. That is a difficult record to ignore, though it likely reflects the horse's form rather than any single failing.

Barley races most often at Class 4 level — solid, competitive mid-tier racing — and has won just 1 of those 16 races, or about 1 in 16. It raced just yesterday, so it is very much still active. Whether another win comes depends heavily on the weather.
