That's a modest return, but it's worth noting that Marsh was in the saddle for the Southwell success, so the combination has at least proven it can get the job done on the right day. Trainer Gemma Tutty, based at Osmotherley in North Yorkshire, has sent out 19 winners this season, which tells you the yard knows how to get a horse ready to win — the question is simply whether Backspin can find that moment again.

The horse is best suited to the shorter end of the spectrum — races between five and six-and-a-half furlongs — where it has a 1-from-7 record, matching its overall win rate. At Class 5, the level where it most often competes, the record is 1 win from 6 races. That's a 17% win rate, or roughly 1 in every 6, which is actually the best conversion rate across any slice of its career. The ceiling here isn't enormous, but Backspin belongs at this level and is competitive enough to be taken seriously on its best days.

What makes the current situation slightly concerning is that the Southwell win is now 14 months in the rearview mirror, and the last six runs read 10-3-6-4-2-5 — only one placing, and a tenth most recently. Backspin raced just yesterday, so it is very much active and in training. Whether that busy schedule is part of a plan to find the right opportunity or simply the reality of a horse that keeps trying without quite delivering, only Gemma Tutty's yard will know. Either way, this is a horse still searching for its second chapter.
