That sole win came at Redcar in June 2025, and it was a long time coming. Trainer Katie Scott is refreshingly candid about why: Baby Rover came to the yard as something of a package deal, joining her full brother Curious Rover, who had already done well for the stable. But where her brother was presumably straightforward, Baby Rover was not. Scott describes her as "a bit of a madam" — the kind of horse that takes time, patience, and a certain amount of stubbornness from the team around her before she starts cooperating. Getting that first win on the board at Redcar was the reward for sticking with her.
What is quietly encouraging is what Scott says about the run since. Baby Rover finished second at Ayr on her most recent outing — just one day ago — and Scott believes that was actually a better performance than the Redcar win itself. That is the kind of detail that matters. A horse running to a higher level in a race she did not win than in the one she did suggests she is improving rather than flatlining. Most of her career has been spent in Class 6, which is the entry-level tier of British racing, and she has won 1 from 13 races at that level — modest, but the Ayr run hints there may be more to come.
Katie Scott's yard has sent out 17 winners this season, so this is not a small operation operating on hope alone. They know what a horse in form looks like, and the fact they are looking forward to Baby Rover's next run — rather than quietly shelving her — says something. She has been a project. She may be about to pay off.
