Alpha Magic

The real intrigue lies in the ground. When the surface is slightly soft, Alpha Magic becomes a different proposition entirely: it has won two of its three races on such conditions, a 67% win rate that is genuinely striking. That last win came at Hamilton Park in June 2025, on ground that clearly suited it. Since then, nothing — six races without a victory, most recently finishing 13th just over a day ago. This dry spell hints that the horse may be waiting for a return to the kind of conditions that bring out its best.

There is also a partnership worth watching. Billy Garritty has ridden Alpha Magic five times and won on it twice — a 40% rate that is almost double the horse's overall win rate. When jockey and horse click, that gap matters. The Easterby yard at Sheriff Hutton in North Yorkshire, which trains Alpha Magic, has sent out 55 winners this season, so there is decent form in the stable. But Alpha Magic itself remains stuck in a rut, and without a win in 14 months, patience is beginning to wear thin. A return to slightly soft ground with Garritty in the saddle might be exactly what it needs to remember how to win.
