In other words, when the yard keep him short and sharp, he is a different animal. His recent form figures — 1, 7, 4 — show a horse who has been quietly improving, not one who stumbled into a win by accident.

What is interesting about that Windsor victory is the timing. It has come at a point in the season when his trainer, Jack Morland, is operating with real confidence from his Newmarket yard. Morland has sent out 16 winners already this season, which suggests a yard that is in fine fettle and placing its horses well. A trainer in that kind of form tends to know exactly when a horse like Yachtsman is ready to strike, and Windsor on 18 May looks like a well-judged moment.

The one slight puzzle in the record is his form at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing — where he has run three times without winning. His Windsor win suggests he is capable of getting the job done at that level, so those earlier blanks may simply reflect a horse who needed time to mature. At three years old, that is entirely normal. Horses of this age are still developing physically and mentally, and it is not unusual for the pieces to fall into place mid-season. The question now is whether Yachtsman can back it up and turn that breakthrough into a habit.
