Trainer Gary Hanmer, who operates out of Tattenhall in Cheshire and has sent out 19 winners already this season, is clearly in no great hurry with this one. Speaking recently, Hanmer pointed to last week's run at Bangor as an example of things not quite clicking — the faster ground there did him no favours. Hanmer's honest assessment is that Woodview Lad is still physically immature: a big, gangly horse who needs time to fill into his frame before he can fully express himself. The trainer notes he actually has more natural pace than his brother Streamsforth Lad, which is an intriguing detail — it hints that the raw talent is there, even if it hasn't yet translated into results.
What makes Woodview Lad worth following, then, is less about what he has done and more about what Hanmer believes he can do. A trainer who wins at a healthy rate this season is prepared to take the long view with this horse rather than squeeze quick results out of him — and patient handling from a productive yard often ends up being exactly the right call. For now, he remains one to watch rather than one to back, but that can change quickly once the right conditions align.
