What gives genuine reason for optimism is who is doing the unlocking. Woodlawn Lily is trained by JP Murtagh at his yard in Coolaghknock Glebe, County Kildare — and this is a team operating in serious form right now. Fifty-four winners sent out this season alone tells you this is not a yard finding its feet; it is one that knows exactly what it is doing. Young horses in this kind of environment tend to learn quickly, and a trainer firing at that volume has usually got a plan for every horse on the roster.
At two years old and with only two races behind her, Woodlawn Lily is very much a work in progress. The fourth-place finish last time out — just one day ago — suggests she is running respectably without yet putting it all together. That is not unusual for a young horse still learning the game. The question is simply whether the penny drops, and in the hands of a yard sending out winners at this rate, the conditions are certainly there for it to happen.
