What is striking about that recent sequence is how little it varies. A 5th here, a 6th there — Wood Whisperer seems to find its level and park itself there. That kind of mid-pack finishing can sometimes indicate a horse that simply needs the right conditions to click, but it can equally suggest one that is honest without being exceptional. Having raced just one day ago, it is clearly an active, robust horse that its team are willing to keep running, which at least speaks to its soundness and willingness to show up.
At this stage, seven races without a win or a place is a significant mountain to climb. The hope for anyone following Wood Whisperer will be that a change — a different distance, different ground, a different kind of race — unlocks something that has not shown up yet. For now, though, patience is the only prize on offer.
