Wondrous Light

At four years old, Wondrous Light is still relatively lightly raced and developing. Portman described the horse back in August as a "lovely, big, scopey type" — the kind of physical frame that often takes time to fill out and mature into. He was already pointing to the four-year-old season as when things would properly click, and that prediction is looking well-timed. The horse won at Lingfield Park in June 2025 for its first career success, and has since added a win at Nottingham just this week — a result that confirms the progression is real and ongoing.

The one honest caveat worth noting is the level at which most of that winning has happened. Wondrous Light typically runs in Class 5 races, which sit near the lower end of the British racing ladder, and at that level has won just 1 from 7, or roughly 1 in every 7. That's a modest return, which suggests the horse doesn't always fire even in beatable company. The wet ground requirement is clearly the key — without it, the performances have been inconsistent, including a sixth and a fifth in its last six runs when conditions presumably didn't suit.

Portman's yard has sent out 46 winners already this season, which is a strong, busy operation, and Wondrous Light looks like one of the horses they've taken their time with rather than rushed. The trainer's earlier comment — that the horse "will be winning more races" and is a "nice type" — was made before the Nottingham win arrived to prove the point. A horse that wins every time the ground softens up, trained by a yard in form, and still improving at four: there's plenty here worth watching.
