That sole win at Tipperary back in the summer of 2022 gave a decent snapshot of what Wodao is: uncomplicated, quick, and willing. His trainer Steph Hollinshead, who runs a small yard in Staffordshire that has sent out seven winners this season, has described him as a genuine horse with plenty of pace — the kind that jumps out and commits, rather than sitting in behind waiting for gaps. The problem at Tipperary was that he was hassled all the way through the race and it caught up with him late on. He still nearly won.

The partnership with jockey Gavin Ryan is worth noting. Of the 11 times they have raced together, they have won twice — a win rate of roughly 1 in 5, or 18%. That is a strikingly better return than Wodao's overall record suggests he is capable of, and it points to a horse that responds well to a jockey who knows him.

Where Wodao has genuinely struggled is at the top level. In six races at Class 2 — some of the best races in Britain — he has not won once. His recent form reads 6-9-5-4-6-14, which is a sequence that does not leap off the page. He is also returning now from a break of around four months, which adds another layer of uncertainty. Some horses come back sharper; others take a run or two to find their rhythm again.

The honest summary is this: Wodao is a horse who has given his the yard plenty of places, the occasional win, and not a lot of heartbreak, because expectations have always been modest. At six years old and without a winner since the summer of 2022, the ceiling is probably known. But horses like this have a habit of surprising you on the right day, on the right ground, with the right jockey — and Ryan on board is always a reason to pay attention.
