Wise Maiden

Trained by Mrs G Andrews at her yard in Marton, North Yorkshire, Wise Maiden is the operation's sole winner of the season so far, which makes this debut success all the more meaningful for a smaller yard. Aintree is one of the most famous racecourses in the world, best known for hosting the Grand National, so landing a winner there is no small thing regardless of the occasion.

One race is a tiny sample, of course, and it would be premature to read too much into a single result. But a horse that wins first time out has clearly arrived in good shape, well-prepared, and ready to perform — and that tells you something about the care that has gone into getting Wise Maiden to the track. Where the yard goes from here will be well worth watching.
