Whiskey Pete

That York win on 14 October 2023 is the centrepiece of the whole story. Jockey Hector Crouch, who has partnered Whiskey Pete in 7 of his 22 races and won 1 of those (so roughly 1 in 7, or 14%), described thinking he was going to win easily with two furlongs to go — then watching his horse idle, wait for a challenger, and only put the race to bed when another horse came to him. That is not a horse who was scrapping for survival. That is a horse who needed something to race against. It is a quirky trait, but it is also the hallmark of a confident animal.

Since then, 32 months have passed without a win. His recent form reads 7-4-5-6-13-11 going back through his last six races, with finishes at the back of the field in his two most recent outings. Trainer Nigel Tinkler, who has sent out 37 winners from his North Yorkshire yard this season and clearly knows what he is doing, has a clear theory about why: Whiskey Pete has been stretched in distance and is a horse who wants normal to fast, dry ground, not the wet or muddy conditions that come with autumn and winter racing. The plan to send him to Bahrain earlier this year was an attempt to find those conditions, and Tinkler believes a return to a mile on the right ground will produce results again.

The numbers support that instinct. Over seven furlongs to a mile, Whiskey Pete has won 1 from 6 races — 17%, which is a far healthier picture than the 0 wins from 8 races he has produced at his most common level of Class 4. Put plainly, he does better in better races at the right trip. He is a horse who has been asked the wrong questions recently. Whether the right question comes soon enough to remind everyone what he showed at York is the interesting part.
