What's encouraging is the direction of travel. Looking at the last six races in reverse order, Westoftignes finished 4th, 11th, 9th, 4th, 2nd and then 1st — so while the mid-sequence results were difficult, the horse has clearly found its stride again at exactly the right time. A run to second place followed immediately by a win suggests something clicked, and the Wexford victory was no fluke in the making.
The horse is trained by John C McConnell, who operates out of Stamullen in County Meath. McConnell's yard has been in seriously good form this season, sending out 44 winners — that's the kind of output that marks a stable firing on all cylinders, and having that support structure behind a horse like Westoftignes matters. When a yard is producing winners at that rate, it usually means horses are fit, well-managed, and running at the right opportunities. Westoftignes raced just 12 days ago, so this is a horse very much in active campaign.
At seven, Westoftignes is no youngster, and with just one win from eight races, expectations have to be measured. But horses in this kind of form — building through a 4th, then 2nd, then a win — sometimes carry that momentum forward. Whether Wexford proves a one-off highlight or the start of a more productive spell will be the story worth watching.
