Western Soldier

The overall record reads two wins and five places from 17 races — roughly 1 in every 8 races ends in a win — which looks modest on paper. But zoom in on the distances he runs at, between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, and the picture sharpens considerably. At those trips he has won 2 of his 7 races, which works out at just under 1 in 3. That is a genuinely strong conversion rate and suggests Mullins has found the right conditions for this horse to thrive.

The most recent win came at Wincanton in November 2025, and the run after that was arguably even more eye-catching: a second place in a three-horse military hurdle at the same track, a race his trainer believes Western Soldier should have won outright. Six months on from that win, he has not returned to the winner's enclosure in six races, but the trajectory of the campaign feels deliberate. Last week's run at Wincanton, where he finished well down the field, can be explained away — the ground was wet and muddy, and Mullins is blunt about the fact that Western Soldier simply does not handle those conditions. He won't run him that way again.

The plan from here has real shape to it. Mullins is pointing him at the military hurdle at Sandown on February 6th, followed by the Grand Military meeting the week before Cheltenham — one of the most atmospheric days in the jumping calendar. These are exactly the kinds of races where Western Soldier has shown he belongs. The yard has already sent out 10 winners this season, so the operation is in good form. If the ground comes up dry, this is a horse with unfinished business in races built specifically for him.
