What makes him particularly interesting is how much conditions matter. On wet or muddy ground, he transforms: 3 wins from just 5 races, a 60% record that is frankly exceptional. Most horses need many runs before patterns like that emerge so clearly. When the rain comes, Western General goes up a gear. His trainer Joe Tizzard, who runs a busy and productive yard in Milborne Port, Dorset — 58 winners this season alone — has clearly clocked this, and it is no coincidence that his most recent win came on exactly those terms at Chepstow in February 2026, in one of the top races in Britain at Class 2 level. That is the ceiling of the sport, and Western General reached it.
Tizzard spoke warmly after Chepstow, noting that the horse had his ears pricked the whole way — a sign that he was within himself, enjoying the occasion rather than being stretched by it. He also mentioned a wind procedure that had been tweaked, which can make a meaningful difference to how freely a horse travels. The form in the six races since backs that up: 7th, 6th, 4th, then 1st, 2nd, 2nd. That is a horse finding his feet again and hitting top form at exactly the right moment.
He has a particular affinity with Newton Abbot too, winning 2 of 3 races there — including his very first career win back in April 2023. Some horses simply suit certain tracks, and Western General is one of them. His usual partner in the saddle is Brendan Powell, who has ridden him in 9 of his races and won 2 of them, roughly 1 in every 4-and-a-half together. It is a working partnership that clearly functions.
At 8 years old and racing just yesterday, Western General is very much in the thick of things. Tizzard noted last autumn that the handicapper had perhaps been unkind after two good wins, but a Class 2 victory at Chepstow suggests the horse has answered that question convincingly. He is older, smarter, and — on his ground — genuinely dangerous.
