War Howl

The most interesting thing about War Howl is what happens at a specific distance. Over seven furlongs to a mile, this horse has won 2 of its 10 races at those trips — a 20% win rate, or roughly 1 in every 5. That is a meaningful number. It suggests War Howl has a genuine comfort zone, and when the conditions suit, it can genuinely threaten. Compare that to its overall record of 1 win from 11 races at Class 4 level — roughly 1 in every 11 — and you start to see a horse that might be running at the right level but needs the right setup to fire.

Those two wins came at notable venues. The first arrived at Doncaster in late June 2025, and then just under a month later came a victory at Ascot in July — one of British racing's most famous tracks. Winning at Ascot at any level is not to be taken lightly; plenty of horses never manage it. That the two wins came so close together suggests War Howl hit a purple patch in the summer, and Ben Haslam's team clearly had the horse in great shape at that point. Haslam has been in fine form more broadly — 35 winners from his Middleham Moor yard this season is a healthy tally from a trainer who knows how to place horses well.

The challenge now is that War Howl has not won in its last six races, and the recent finishing positions — 18th, 11th, 13th, 9th, 9th, 6th — show a horse that has been running into trouble. The most recent result, a sixth place just yesterday, is at least a step in the right direction after a run of double-figure finishes. The Ascot win is now 10 months in the rear-view mirror. Whether War Howl can rediscover that summer form and add to a tally of two is the question worth watching.
