War Howl

Ben Haslam's Middleham Moor yard has had a productive season with 35 winners, so the infrastructure is solid, but War Howl plainly isn't thriving in it. The horse does have a distance sweet spot — at 7 furlongs to a mile, he has won 2 of 12 races, roughly a 17 per cent win rate — which is his best work. The trouble is he's been unable to translate that form into the Class 4 races where he typically competes: just 1 win from 11 attempts there, a 9 per cent success rate that barely beats pure chance. His recent form (finishing 7th, 9th, 10th, 18th, 11th and 13th) suggests he's lost competitive sharpness, drifting further back in the field and rarely troubling the placings.

For a horse still racing at four years old, War Howl sits in limbo. He's proven he can win — that Ascot victory and earlier success at Doncaster confirm he's capable on his day — but he hasn't found that day in over a year. Whether he's struggling with injury, loss of form, or simply lost his edge after what may have been a career-best spell last summer is unknowable from the bare record. What is clear is that the yard will be searching for an answer, and time may be running out.
