Trained by Ross O'Sullivan in Co Kildare, the horse is at least in capable hands. O'Sullivan's yard has sent out 35 winners already this season, which is a solid operation by any measure — roughly the kind of output that puts a trainer firmly in the mid-to-upper tier of the Irish training ranks. The infrastructure and know-how are clearly there. Walking In Mayo just hasn't found a way to convert that support into a win yet.
The recent form makes for tough reading. Finishing positions of 9th, 15th, 11th, 6th, 8th, and a non-completion across the last six races suggest a horse that is competitive to a point but consistently finding rivals too strong. There's no obvious upward curve in those numbers, no sign of a horse creeping closer to the frame with each run. That said, it raced just one day ago, so the team clearly believe there's still something to run for — you don't keep entering a horse if you've given up on it.
Whether Walking In Mayo is simply finding its level, waiting for the right opportunity, or still maturing into its best form is hard to say from the outside. What is clear is that patience is being tested, and the first win — if it comes — will be a long time coming and all the more welcome for it.
