The bare numbers are solid: three wins and nine places from 12 races, meaning Volterra has finished in the top three in a remarkable 12 of those 12 attempts — a perfect record of never running badly. The win rate of 25%, or roughly one win in every four races, is genuinely strong for a horse operating at this level, where most rivals are well-prepared and competitive. Ryan's yard has sent out 45 winners already this season, so there is clearly no shortage of quality around the place, and Volterra clearly belongs in that company.
The highlight on the CV is a Class 2 win at Ascot in October 2024 — and if you know anything about British racing, Ascot is where reputations get made. It is the home of Royal Ascot, one of the sport's great occasions, and winning there at any level carries weight. Jockey Shane Gray, who rode that day, was open about the experience: he said he could not believe how well Volterra was travelling as they turned for home, and that when he asked the horse to go, the response was immediate. Gray called Ascot "the premiership of racing" and said he genuinely believes Volterra is the type of horse that could earn black-type — a formal mark of quality that opens doors to the very best races.
Kevin Ryan has thought highly of Volterra for some time. Earlier in 2024, he flagged the horse as one with a genuine chance of going to a top Royal Ascot race, suggesting it would take a horse of Group level to win the Britannia — and that Volterra could be exactly that. That kind of confidence from a trainer who has seen plenty of horses come and go means something.
What is also notable is how much Volterra likes normal ground conditions: two wins from four races on a standard surface, a 50% win rate that tells you the horse is at its most dangerous when the ground is fair. With recent form reading second, third, second, third, first, second — relentlessly competitive — and a race just 11 days ago, Volterra arrives at whatever comes next fresh, battle-hardened, and with a very live chance of adding to that Ascot peak.
