The tricky part is that Vilaine Verlaine has spent most of its career racing at a level where the competition has been too stiff. In five races at Class 5 — the bread-and-butter, everyday level of British racing — it has yet to win once. That's a frustrating pattern for any yard to manage, because you want your horses competing where they can win, and this one keeps finding ways not to quite get there at that tier.
Recent form makes for sobering reading. The last six results, from most recent backwards, read 13th, 6th, 10th, 5th, 2nd, 4th — and there has been no win since December 2024, now over 17 months ago. That second place gives a flicker of hope, suggesting the ability is still there, but the three finishes outside the top ten are harder to explain away. Horses go through patches, but a 13th is a long way back.
Trainer Mark Usher operates out of Upper Lambourn in Berkshire and has sent out 14 winners so far this season, so the yard is clearly functioning well. The fact that Vilaine Verlaine raced just yesterday means this is a horse very much in active training, being kept busy and tested regularly. The question now is whether Usher can find the right race — ideally back at Chelmsford, over that sweet spot of a mile and three or four furlongs — to unlock another win. The talent appears to be there in the right circumstances. It just needs everything to click at once again.
