What lends the situation some genuine interest is the yard behind the horse. Ed Walker operates out of Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, and his team has sent out 80 winners already this season — a serious output that marks Walker as one of the more productive trainers currently operating. Horses don't tend to rack up that kind of seasonal tally from a quiet backwater operation. If Velvet Goldmine is in that stable, there's at least a credible hand on the reins. The horse raced just yesterday, so the yard — the team, rather — are clearly keeping busy with it and haven't lost faith after modest early results.
Two races is a very small sample. Plenty of horses take time to find their feet, and a third-place finish from the most recent outing suggests Velvet Goldmine is learning. Whether there's more to come remains to be seen, but with a high-volume yard backing it and a racing age of just three, the story is still very much being written.
