Compared to a blank record of zero wins from five races at the higher Class 4 level, the picture is fairly clear: Uniting is a horse that needs things set up just right. Get the distance right, and it delivers. Step up in class, and it has yet to find an answer.

Both of those wins came with Ryan Kavanagh in the saddle. The pair have raced together nine times and won twice — a win rate of 22%, or roughly 1 in every 4-and-a-half rides. That is a notably better return than the overall career figures suggest, which points to a genuine partnership worth watching. Kavanagh clearly understands this horse.

Back-to-back wins for any horse is encouraging, and doing it at two different tracks suggests the form was genuine rather than a fluke of conditions or a weak field. The most recent win at Newcastle came four months ago now, and with recent form reading 1-3-7-9-3-2 (that Newcastle win the standout), there have been some mixed performances since. A ninth and a seventh in the mix there suggest a horse that can be frustrating.

But Uniting raced just one day ago and is clearly very much in the thick of things. Ian Williams keeps a busy yard, and horses in form yards tend to find opportunities. If Kavanagh is in the saddle and the distance suits, this is precisely the sort of horse a knowledgeable friend would quietly mention before the race card.
