His recent form tells a quietly encouraging story, though. A second place in his most recent completed race, followed by three fourth-place finishes and another fourth, suggests a horse that is consistently there or thereabouts rather than one drifting backwards. He raced just yesterday, which means this is a horse in the thick of a busy campaign right now.

Keith Donoghue has been Union Station's regular partner, riding him in 13 of his 17 races without a win between them. That is a long partnership to still be waiting on a breakthrough, and at some point the question becomes whether a change of jockey might unlock something — or whether the horse simply needs the right race on the right day.

What makes Union Station worth watching, though, is what his trainer Gavin Cromwell has in mind for him. Cromwell, whose yard in Navan has sent out 97 winners already this season — a genuinely productive operation — has described Union Station as a chaser in the making. In other words, jumping fences, not hurdles, is where this horse is expected to come into his own. He has been racing over hurdles in the meantime, and Cromwell recently held him back from a race at Naas because the ground was not to his liking. That kind of careful management suggests a team that is protecting something they believe in.

The winless record is hard to ignore, but the framing matters here. If Cromwell is right, Union Station has spent his career so far doing the equivalent of a sprinter running middle-distance races — competitive enough to place, but not yet in his true discipline. The chasing career ahead may look very different from the one on the page so far.
