Under The Sun

That one career win came at Salisbury back in September 2023, and it remains the only time Under The Sun has got its nose in front. That was 32 months ago now, and the last six runs — including a couple of mid-field finishes and a distant twelfth — suggest it hasn't been close to repeating the trick. Racing at Class 4 level, which sits comfortably in the middle tier of British racing, the horse has won 1 from 7 races at that grade, a win rate of around 14%. That's not terrible, but it does mean opportunities have come and gone without much to show for them.

Where Under The Sun does show a flicker of something more interesting is over a mile and a furlong to a mile and two furlongs. At those distances it has won 1 from 9 races — 11%, or just over 1 in every 9 — which is meaningfully better than its overall record suggests. That's the distance profile worth watching if you're keeping tabs on this horse.

The yard behind it, Gary and Josh Moore based in West Sussex, has been in fine form this season with 99 winners sent out — a serious operation that clearly knows how to get horses ready to win. The fact that Under The Sun hasn't obliged despite being in capable hands perhaps says something about the horse itself rather than the training. It raced just yesterday, so it's very much still in training and being pointed at opportunities. Whether another Salisbury trip — the scene of its one moment of glory — might unlock something again is an interesting question. For now, it's a horse still searching for its second chapter.
