The recent form makes for interesting reading. Two seconds in a row suggest Tyraxes was in good heart at one point, and a third place a couple of runs later shows it has not lost the ability to run well. But the two tenth-place finishes sandwiched in there are a reminder that consistency remains elusive. A fourth place most recently, just one day ago, means this horse is as active as they come — racing fresh and often, which tells you the team believes there is a race to be won somewhere.
That team is trained by Denis Gerard Hogan, operating out of Cloughjordan in County Tipperary. Hogan has sent out 56 winners this season alone, which marks him out as a yard in serious form — a trainer who clearly knows how to get horses ready to win. The fact that Tyraxes has not yet converted for him is unlikely to reflect a lack of preparation. Sometimes a horse just needs the right race, the right day, the right moment. With a trainer firing at that rate, the belief will not have gone anywhere.
For now, Tyraxes sits in that intriguing category of horses that are good enough to be placed repeatedly but have not yet proved they can win. That is not a condemnation — plenty of horses find their level and then suddenly click. With nine races of experience under its belt, a yard in fine form behind it, and a run just yesterday keeping it sharp, the question is not really whether Tyraxes can win, but when the pieces finally fall into place.
