Trojan Fighter

The real encouragement lies in what distances suit this horse. Over the longer routes—anything from a mile and three-quarters to two miles—Trojan Fighter has won one of every four races, a decent win rate that hints at a preference for stamina racing over the quicker two-miler. That's the kind of specificity that trainers build plans around. P Twomey's yard at Cashel, in County Tipperary, has had a productive season with 35 winners sent out, so there is clearly competence in the operation.

Recent form tells a murkier story, though. The last six runs show a horse that has been placed once (fourth, which brought one placing), but otherwise has struggled: ninth, eighth, then a run of fourth, fifth, fourth and fourth again most recently just yesterday. That's a run of four consecutive fourths—the kind of pattern that suggests Trojan Fighter is competitive enough to stay in the race but not quite good enough to win it. The horse is still very much active and still racing, which is positive, but it needs a change of fortune soon to avoid slipping down the ladder. At three years old, there is time yet, and longer races remain the route most likely to unlock another win.
