Trackman

The recent form makes for tough reading. In its last six races, Trackman has finished sixth, fifth, sixth, seventh, seventh, and fifth — a sequence that tells a pretty consistent story. There are no dramatic crashes in form, no signs of a horse falling apart, but equally no hint of a breakthrough coming. Fifth and sixth-place finishes at the bottom level of British racing, Class 6, are the racing equivalent of always being the bridesmaid. Nineteen of Trackman's 24 races have come at that level, and it has yet to win any of them. Class 6 is where horses compete for the most modest prizes in the sport — and even there, Trackman hasn't managed to get over the line.

Jockey Tyler Heard has given it every chance, partnering the horse seven times without a win to show for it. That is not necessarily a reflection on Heard — some horses simply don't win, and seven rides on the same horse suggests a level of loyalty and persistence from the team. Trainer Simon Pearce, based at Newmarket — one of the heartlands of British racing — has sent out five winners this season, so the yard clearly knows how to get a horse ready to win. Trackman just hasn't been one of them.

Raced just yesterday, the horse is clearly still active and still being given opportunities. At six years old, it isn't ancient, but time is not exactly on its side either. For a horse with no wins and modest recent placings, every race now feels like a question more than an opportunity: is this the day things finally click, or is Trackman simply one of those horses that keeps competing without ever quite winning? There is no shame in that — plenty of horses run honest races throughout their careers without a victory — but it does make Trackman's story one of persistence rather than triumph, at least for now.
