Trained by Gavin Cromwell out of Navan in County Meath, Tofino is part of a yard that has been flying this season — 97 winners and counting, which tells you this is a professional operation with serious strings attached. Cromwell knows how to get horses to perform, so Tofino's lack of wins isn't down to being poorly managed. It simply hasn't found the right moment to go one better, which is something racehorses do with frustrating regularity.

The horse races most often with jockey Gary Carroll in the saddle — they've partnered eight times together, producing that single win, a return of around 1 in 8. That's not a bad hit rate by the standards of a horse at this level, even if the recent run of form tells a different story. The last six races have produced a couple of late finishes outside the places entirely, though a second and a third in there show the ability hasn't entirely evaporated.

Where Tofino looks most at home is over distances of one mile one furlong to one mile two furlongs — winning once from four attempts at those trips, which is a 25% win rate and comfortably the best return of any distance range in the career. The key for the team will be getting Tofino back to those trips under the right conditions and hoping that Curragh spark can be rekindled.
