Toby Two Scoops

The recent form tells an interesting story. Three of the last six races have produced a placed finish — a third, a second, and another third — with the second place in particular suggesting Toby Two Scoops came tantalisingly close to breaking that duck. The horse raced just yesterday, so this is very much a live, active story with more chapters still to be written.

Jockey Aiden Brookes has been in the saddle for six of those races and is yet to ride the horse to a win, but the partnership keeps getting results in terms of places, which is why the combination keeps coming back together. Trainer Micky Hammond, based at Middleham in North Yorkshire, has had 24 winners on the board this season from his yard — a healthy total that shows he knows how to get horses ready to win. The fact that Toby Two Scoops hasn't yet contributed to that tally despite racing regularly is one of those small mysteries that keeps racing interesting. Hammond has the tools; this horse just hasn't quite fired.

At Class 5, Toby Two Scoops is competing at the entry level of British racing — these are everyday races rather than headline events. Winning at this level isn't glamorous, but it matters enormously to everyone involved. Going winless from six races at the same grade tells you the horse is competitive but not quite dominant enough to break through, and that gap between "nearly" and "there" is where a lot of horses spend their careers. Whether Toby Two Scoops can finally turn a placed finish into a win is the question Hammond and Brookes will be working hard to answer. Given how recently this horse last raced, it won't be long before we find out.
