Tiernan

Tiernan is a four-year-old who arrived at Jardine's yard in Carrutherstown at the start of the year as a castoff from Godolphin, one of the most powerful operations in world racing. Horses leave setups like that for all sorts of reasons, and Jardine took a calculated punt — buying him at the sales because the breeding suggested a horse that would get better the further he ran. That kind of staying pedigree is worth paying attention to: it usually means the horse takes time to find its feet, and that patience can pay off handsomely.

The results so far — zero wins and two placed finishes from six races — look modest on paper, but context matters. His best effort came when he finished third in the Glasgow Stakes, a performance good enough to earn him an official rating of 101. In British racing, ratings work like a handicap system: 101 puts Tiernan firmly in the top tier of his grade, competing against genuinely useful horses. Then, most recently, he was beaten as the heavy favourite — the kind of result that makes headlines for the wrong reasons — but Jardine isn't losing sleep over it. The winner, he points out, looks like a very good horse. Sometimes you simply bump into something better on the day.

What makes Tiernan an interesting horse to follow is that the trajectory, while slow, is pointing upward. Jardine's yard has sent out 57 winners this season, so this isn't a team guessing in the dark — they know what a good horse looks like. The trainer's own words are telling: "He's been a bit lazy at home, but he's progressing well... I've still got faith in our horse. He could be very good." That's not the language of someone managing expectations. Tiernan raced just yesterday and is very much a work in progress — but occasionally, the horses that take the longest to figure out are the ones worth waiting for.
