The recent form tells the story of a horse learning its trade. A second place two days ago shows it is still competitive, but the run before that was a fourth, and before that a fifth. There was a spell of two fifth-place finishes earlier in the campaign—the kind of run that tests whether a young horse has the character to bounce back. It did, at least enough to get into the places again most recently. Seven weeks have passed since the win at Bath, which is a lengthy gap in a two-year-old's calendar, suggesting either injury, recovery time, or a careful approach by trainer Nick Scholfield. The Lambourn yard is having a solid season with 22 winners already, so the horse is in a stable with form and know-how behind it.

The real question now is whether Theheatison can find another win and begin climbing the ladder. One victory in six races is respectable for a young horse, especially one that appears to be proving itself at the right distances, but the gaps between wins and the recent mixed form suggest plenty of racing and development lie ahead.
