Back-to-back third-place finishes followed by a runner-up last time out suggests something may be building — though this horse has tested that theory before.

The partnership with jockey Mr J R Martin is the most puzzling subplot here. Six races together and no wins is a combination that hasn't clicked yet, at least not in terms of getting its nose in front. Whether that changes soon is one of the more interesting questions hanging over the yard. Trainer F G Hand has sent out two winners this season, so the operation is ticking over — and a horse that finished second just one day ago is clearly fit, ready, and in the mix.

At nine, Theflyingbee is not a young project. This is a horse in the later stages of its career, experienced enough to know exactly what it's doing out there. The nine places across 20 races suggest it competes honestly and finds the line competitive rather than giving up — and that second place just yesterday is as clear a signal as any that the will is still there. Whether a third career win is coming soon, or whether the places keep mounting without the breakthrough, is exactly the kind of open question that makes following a horse like this genuinely compelling.
