The headline moment of his career came not in a winning one, but a placing. He finished second in the Plate at the Cheltenham Festival, one of the great old chases at one of the most famous meetings in the world. Cromwell has been candid that the plan was almost perfectly executed — they targeted the race deliberately, switched him from a different race on the card after a tactical rethink, and he very nearly delivered. Getting that close at Cheltenham without winning is both a frustration and a badge of honour. It tells you the horse belongs at a high level.

His most recent win came at Clonmel just this week — on 5 June 2026 — so he is clearly in form right now. He has always thrived on normal ground conditions, winning 4 of his 10 races on a standard surface, meaning he wins 40% of the time when conditions suit him. That is a remarkable number: two in every five races on good ground. His happiest hunting ground, though, is Kilbeggan, where he has won 2 of his 3 visits — a course record that suggests something about the track really suits how he travels and finishes.

His regular jockey Daniel King has ridden him in 7 races together, winning once, which at around 1 in 7 rides perhaps understates what the partnership has produced — several of those outings have still yielded places, and the horse has shown his best form when Cromwell has been able to place him carefully. At nine, Thecompanysergeant is not a young horse, but he is clearly still competitive, still improving on certain tracks and in certain conditions, and he has already given his yard a Cheltenham Festival run that most horses never get close to.
