What we can say is that the breeding is promising. The father, Essential Quality, is a highly regarded American stallion who won some of the biggest races in the United States and has already started producing winners. The mother comes from the line of Declaration Of War, another top-level American sire known for passing on speed and toughness. In horse racing, bloodlines are not a guarantee of anything — plenty of well-bred horses never amount to much — but they are the closest thing to a clue you get before a horse has actually raced. On paper at least, The Puma has the right kind of family behind it.
At three years old, this is exactly the right age to be making a debut. Everything about The Puma's first race will be worth watching closely, because right now that first run is the only story there is.
