The Mourne Rambler

The story so far has a pleasing shape to it. A first win came at Leopardstown on St Stephen's Day 2025, which is one of Irish racing's great occasions — the stands packed, the atmosphere electric, and plenty of smart horses on show. Winning there on 26 December is not a quiet debut; it is a statement. Then, roughly ten weeks later, The Mourne Rambler went one better and won at Cheltenham. For anyone unfamiliar with what that means: Cheltenham is the most prestigious jumping venue in the world, the place where reputations are made and where horses from Ireland travel to prove themselves against the very best. Winning there on 11 March 2026 puts The Mourne Rambler in rare company for a horse with so few races under its belt.

Behind the horse stands Noel Meade, one of the most experienced trainers in Ireland, operating out of Castletown in Co Meath. His yard has sent out 37 winners already this season — that kind of output does not happen by accident. It reflects a training operation that knows exactly what it is doing, and crucially, one that picks its targets well. The fact that Meade has pointed The Mourne Rambler at Cheltenham this early in the horse's career suggests he thinks he has something genuinely special on his hands.

With only three races to go on, there is still plenty to learn about this horse, but the early evidence is hard to argue with. Two wins from three outings, a Cheltenham victory already banked, and a trainer with the experience to know how to keep the momentum going. The Mourne Rambler is very much a horse to watch.
