Perth clearly suits it. The track, the atmosphere, the layout — something about the place brings out the best in it. Both victories also came on normal ground, and its overall record on that surface backs that up: 2 wins from 12 races, or roughly 1 in 6. Put it on a wet, muddy track and the numbers fall away sharply.

The partnership with Miss Roisin Leech is worth noting too. She has ridden The Longest Day in 13 of its 19 races and is responsible for both wins — a win rate of 15%, or about 1 in every 7 rides together. That kind of familiarity between horse and rider tends to matter, especially for a horse that presumably needs things done a particular way. The yard is trained by Sophie Leech, based in Gloucestershire, and has sent out 4 winners already this season — a small operation that clearly knows how to place its horses.

The last win came at Perth on 19 August 2023, which is now 33 months ago. Since then, 6 races without a win, and the recent form — finishing 3rd, 4th, well beaten, and unplaced across the last six outings — does not suggest a horse building towards something. It raced just one day ago, so it is firmly in the middle of a campaign. If The Longest Day is going to find the winner's enclosure again, the recipe looks obvious: get it back to Perth, on decent ground, with Roisin Leech in the saddle. Whether that combination comes around again is the question.
