That single victory came at Limerick back in July 2022, now 46 months ago, and he has not been able to repeat it in the six races since. His recent form makes for tough reading — finishing 15th, 16th, 5th and 3rd in his last four outings — though that third place is at least a sign of life. He raced just yesterday, so whatever is next for him is very much a live conversation.

The horse has tried his hand at the top level too, running three times in Class 1 races — the biggest and most prestigious races in Britain — without finding the winner's enclosure. That is an honest reflection of where he sits: competitive enough to be entered at the highest tier, not quite the firepower to win there.

His most regular partner in the saddle has been the highly regarded Davy Russell, who has ridden him in 6 of his 17 races and won on him once — a win rate of 17%, or 1 in every 6 rides together, which is actually his best return with any jockey. Trainer Gordon Elliott has spoken warmly about him, noting that he does not show a great deal at home on the gallops but that Russell was enthusiastic about him after one particular run — and Elliott's plan was simply to find a suitable race where he could add to that sole win.

There have been health issues along the way too. Elliott mentioned at one point that the horse had suffered badly with sinus problems, and that clearing up appeared to bring him back to something closer to his best. Jockey Jordan Gainford, after a run at Cheltenham, was encouraged — talking about travelling well and having a genuine chance coming to the last fence before meeting it slightly wrong. These are the small margins that define a horse like The Bosses Oscar: talented enough to be in the picture, just not quite able to close the deal when it matters most.
