Taranis is bred for speed. The sire, Space Blues, was one of the quickest horses of his generation — a sprinter who won at the highest level in France and carried his owners' colours to Group 1 glory. The dam is by Shalaa, another sprinting influence. Put the two together and you have a horse built to go fast over short distances. Whether Taranis has inherited that talent is exactly what today's race is designed to find out.
The trainer is Eve Johnson Houghton, who operates out of Blewbury in Oxfordshire. This season her yard has sent out 39 winners — a serious tally that puts her firmly among the names worth knowing in British racing. A trainer running at that kind of volume does not send horses to the track without believing they have a genuine chance. That Taranis is here today, as a first-time runner, suggests the yard likes what they have seen at home.
