Jefferson's yard has sent out 8 winners already this season, so they know what a decent horse looks like — and Jefferson is cautiously optimistic about this one. Tantivy Vavoom came over from Ireland, where she dead-heated in a point-to-point at Rathcannon in April. That result becomes more interesting when you learn the horse she tied with went on to win under trainer Olly Murphy later in the summer. In other words, she matched strides with a horse that proved it belonged at a decent level. She then ran again without finding a buyer at the sales, which is how she ended up at Jefferson's yard.
Her most recent run came just yesterday, a seventh-place finish at Sedgefield over two miles and four furlongs. Jefferson is open about the fact she's still working out what this horse needs — whether that's a longer trip or better ground conditions. Those are two very different problems with very different solutions, and figuring out which one it is takes time and patience. The honest uncertainty in Jefferson's assessment actually tells you something reassuring: this is a trainer paying close attention rather than just filling race entries.
Competing at Class 4 level — solid, competitive mid-tier racing — Tantivy Vavoom has yet to trouble the judge in four races at that grade. But Jefferson describes her as going well at home and talks about pointing her towards mares' races, where she'd face a smaller, more specific pool of rivals. There's quiet confidence there. Not every horse announces itself immediately, and at six years old, she's still finding her feet under rules. Jefferson's phrase "she has something about her" is the kind of thing a trainer says when they'd rather not jinx it — and sometimes, that's exactly the horse worth watching.
