Sweet Reward

These older campaigners need the right conditions. Sweet Reward is a horse that sparkles on fast, dry ground—he has won 2 of his 9 races when the going has been firm—but he struggles in Class 3 company, having won none of his 14 attempts at that level. He is a course specialist at Goodwood with 2 wins from 10 races there, and his last victory came at Lingfield Park on 30 May, three months back, when jockey Olivia Tubb got the best out of him by making the running and letting him gallop. She knew what she had: a big horse who needs room and his proper trip, not the short, sharp mile that had beaten him before.

Rob Hornby rides him most often, though the partnership has yielded only 2 wins from 22 races together. Sweet Reward was last seen a day ago and is still active, but the clock is ticking for an older horse. He will need the ground to suit him, the race to come at the right distance, and his moment to align—the sort of precise alignment that becomes rarer as a horse gets older and wearier. When all those elements click, he can still win. When they don't, he fills a place and moves on.
