Sweet Cicely

The four-year-old has managed two placed finishes from those 19 attempts, which means she has at least shown she can get close — just not close enough. Her recent form tells a harder story, though. The last six runs read 4-4-5-9-10-11, a slide that suggests things are moving in the wrong direction rather than building toward a breakthrough. Finishing fourth twice is promising until you notice the sequence that followed: ninth, tenth, eleventh. That is not a horse finding its rhythm.

Sweet Cicely races almost exclusively at Class 6, the entry level of British racing, and has gone 0 from 14 at that level. To put that plainly: even in the easiest grade of race available, the win has not come. Her most regular partner is jockey Oisin Orr, who has ridden her five times without managing a victory between them. That is not a criticism of either — sometimes a horse and jockey simply have not found the right day yet — but the numbers do not offer much encouragement.

She is trained by Mike Sowersby at his yard in Little Barugh, North Yorkshire. Sowersby's team has sent out six winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses to the line first. Sweet Cicely, so far, has not been one of them. She raced just yesterday, which tells you at least that she is fit and active — the yard is still running her, still looking for that moment to click.

Whether it ever does is the question. Some horses spend entire careers placing without winning and remain useful, competitive animals. Others eventually find their race. At four years old, Sweet Cicely is not old by any means, but the window does not stay open forever. For now, she is a horse that keeps showing up — and perhaps that persistence, if nothing else, is worth something.
